When do you switch systems?

THIS is the toughest question of all to me, and a source of constant consternation. I have also likely lost enough money buying and selling cameras and lenses from one system to try another to PAY for an entire new system. But, I do love the hunt and the side-effect of now being able to shoot with any camera, and to help students who come to class with any camera. So when should you consider changing systems/brands?

I have multiple kits working at all times. Yes, I long for the day that a single camera can do everything I need. Will that camera ever exist? It already does except that in my feeble little brain it doesn’t. Damn.

I currently WORK with a Fujifilm GFX100S. There is likely no better image maker under $10K. Larger sensor than full frame, but slower to work with. Since I shoot mostly food and editorial with this camera, speed is not an issue. Can it be my ONLY camera? Nope. Tough to travel with, limited lenses, and expensive. I NEED a second kit. APS-C or Full-frame? I still don’t know.

I’ve been a Nikon shooter since 1984. I WANT that ONE camera to be a Nikon. It isn’t. For now I must have two kits. One for work, one for everything else. Right now that second kit is also Fujifilm. An X-H2 with a few lenses. Although I did grab a great deal on a Nikon Z5, 24-70/4, and 85/1.8. It felt good to own a Nikon again. It is a sickness, I know.

As of this posting, Nikon is getting closer to releasing a Nikon Z8. By all accounts it could be that one camera for everything else. It will not replace my GFX100S in the foreseeable future. A Z8 with a Nikon 24-120, 85, and (pending) 200-600 could meet all my non-work needs. Fingers crossed until then.
